Benjamin Franklin was terribly misguided when he made that quote. Democracy had never been thoroughly tried, so he can be forgiven for not foreseeing that there were more serious issues with the abuse of democracy than what originates with ordinary people. So, the United States is organized as a republic and that is supposed to keep the masses from voting everything in the treasury into their own pockets.
Over the years, new sophisticated systems of exploiting weaknesses in democracy have evolved and are now used. Experience shows that the poor do not have the wherewithal to petition government. The poor have not actually tried to take anything from the rich.
The unwashed masses actually have presented no threat to any moneyed interests in the United States. They have proven to be a constituency worth buying by providing a few benefits to them over the years. But, no money has ever been voted out of anyone else’s pockets based on any actions by the poor. Instead, democracy turns out to be an incubator for crime, especially of the organized variety.
Organized crime, by financing campaigns and running its own candidates has taken over government. Why would they not? Who is to stop them? Suppose an organized crime syndicate is worried about the FBI. Why not just buy the FBI? Why break a law? Just pass a new law legalizing a previously illegal activity.
What do they do to keep the keep the public on their side? They buy all of the media outlets and make sure citizens only hear what they want them to hear.
Americans get confused. They see a massive group of migrants marching towards the border. The march is reported on as if it was some kind of organic event that has just sprang up. The migrants are presented as if they are no different than any other people coming to the United States looking for a better life. But they are different. The march is orchestrated and masses of poor people entering the country have great economic benefit to the elite who finance and organize these events.
The founding fathers were right, that with democracy, some potential threats would have to be addressed. They did not anticipate that organized crime would take over the country. There is talk about “the shadow government.” There really is no such thing. It is organized crime that dictates policy to congress. It is organized crime that causes senators and congressmen to step down, when their re-election is a sure thing.
But, many Americans benefit from the things organized crime does. That is temporary but some Americans will always benefit and that makes it difficult to re-establish law and order.
The founding fathers, like all historical figures were not at all like they have always been popularly portrayed. They were motivated out of self interest like all living entities are. The founding fathers did not provide a method for testing the constitutionality of laws. They may very well have purposefully left openings for the exploitation of ordinary people. The Supreme Court, a political body, ended up with the role of deciding constitutionality of laws.

The rich always seek clever ways to suck more wealth through bondage to their debt:
Proverbs 22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor; And the borrower is servant to the lender.
The first church started by the apostles after Pentecost knew what Jesus wanted in His church:
Acts 2:42-47 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers. (43) And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. (44) And all that believed were together, and had all things common; (45) and they sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, according as any man had need. (46) And day by day, continuing stedfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, (47) praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved.
Sadly today there is not a church in America that replicates that depth of love for one another:
2 Timothy 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come. (2) For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, (3) without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, (4) traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; (5) holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away.

When the organized criminals start working overtime to eliminate all means of contesting their power over their victims through censorship and gun control, we are in the final push towards tyranny.

Old age and S/T memory being what it is, I happened to read your article again with fresh eyes and thought to myself “What a fantastic article.” The realization has been boiling up in me how utterly irrelevant the interests of the people are to the political elites. Policies that are nothing less than utter madness are instituted and extolled by the BAPF (bought and paid for) media and all the wise “analysts” nod solemnly in approval. Gen. Jack Keane reliably observes two or three times a week on Fox how the expansionist plans of the Rasputin in the Kremlin must be thwarted. Venezuel has become Worst Regime in the World in a matter of, what, 60 days? And our arrogant moron of a SoS and Bolton are drooling at the prospect of American boots on the ground. EVERY governmental decision is in the wrong direction — more power for the federal power, more widespread infanticide, more foreigners, more AntiFa, more spending, more debt, more crime, more war, more homosexual agenda, more confusion about chromosomes, more Muslims, more monopoly, less freedom of speech, and more slobbering over our great friend in the Middle East.
Trump was definitely from left field and he faked out Them. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where the populists got the bit between their teeth but the elites clustered around him like T-cells and, alas, it turns out that Trump was not up to the job. I think he has a sense of the equities of trade deals, knows about encouraging animal spirits, and appreciates that our foreign wars are horriblly wasteful if nothing else. But he’s utterly without constitutional insight and white replacement he simply does not see. The 3-D chess notion has long since been disproved. There’s really no there there and liberty has indeed been thrown away. There are no insightful billionaires with Trump’s courage to take on the elites/criminals. There is no Democracy Fix as all Western voters demonstrate. Patriotic, salvationist, nationalist parties are routinely treated like whores at a Sunday school picnic and earn a percentage share more of the vote, but no more. Westerners refuse to see what’s in front of their face. The Founders created an amazing document but they never foresaw that the people just were not up to the task of protecting their liberties. Maybe not. Frankling at least indicated that there was a possibility that that might be the case.
The billionaires all bat for the other team. But the elite have been too clever by half. It’s been fun for them to goose the spending and the debt and drink the ambrosia issuing from the spigots of the Fed, but servicing the debt is something they can’t wish away and God knows what the loss of reserve currency might mean. If the Founders had been able to look into the future and if they had had a sense of humor they would have put in at the bottom of Art. I, Sect. 8 that “For those who are tempted to tinker with these explicitly delegated powers know that God will not be mocked. You have been warned.”
As some wise person said somewhere on the web, the problems created by liberalism will only be solved by illiberal methods. But first there will be The Great Unraveling and the Great Die Off in the urban cesspools.
Thanks Richard. One of the things I have to wonder is why the founders did not provide a way to enforce the previsions of the constitution? I am not sure that was by accident. We have to realize they were the elitists of the colonies during the revolutionary period. The Supreme Court has no natural authority to decide constitutional issues. That they do so is by custom only. Supreme Court justices are actually not the countries greatest authorities on law. The are the best politicians among judges and manage to get appointed to the bench. The supreme court serves as a rolling constitutional convention.
At the time the constitution was written there was no such thing as an authority on American law. So, the constitution was written to be interpreted by ordinary people. That is evident just by reading it. A jury of citizens would come up with more optimum decisions.
Richard, thanks for commenting. I will just mention that the incentive to serve is completely imaginary. Anyone who is elected to office will act based on self interest unless constituents stop him from doing so. Self interest is the only universal incentive mankind has. Is that bad? In my analysis there is no bad or good. That is just the way it is. Wanting it to be otherwise makes no difference. The popular assumption is that representatives actually do have an incentive to serve. It is also assumed that when folks go to work in the public sector that self interest disappears. That doesn’t happen. Instead where the incentive to economize is part of a free market system, that incentive is reversed when work is done in the public sector. It is hard for self government to work well when the public is convinced government works one way when it actually works in an opposite way. There is nothing you wrote that I disagree with.
Nothing the Founders and Ratifiers did purported to create any non-political entity in our governments. Where the federal courts were concerned they sought to diminish the role of politics by making appointments lifetime appointments. Impeachment and the option to limit the jurisdiction of inferior federal courts were tools to punish or thwart those who refused a la Thomas a Becket to take the duty and importance of their office to heart and put aside base personal interest.
The power to decide cases “arising under this Constitution” IS a way of testing constitutionality.
You are quite right that [criminals and traitors] found “new sophisticated systems of exploiting weaknesses” in providing for the exercise of popular sovereignty (not democracy). Just how large a log has been jammed down the throat of the people of this country is hard to see in every detail but it is nonetheless a massive one. The will of the people is now only a concept that is a sad, sad joke. Still, there’s no getting around the fact that the people handed all their power away with the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, and 19th Amendments and thought themselves fine fellows indeed.
