“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!”
_ Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was terribly misguided when he made that quote. Democracy had never been thoroughly tried, so he can be forgiven for not foreseeing that there were more serious issues with the abuse of democracy than what originates with ordinary people. So, the United States is organized as a republic and that is supposed to keep the masses from voting everything in the treasury into their own pockets. Continue reading →
The campaign for the 2020 presidential election has be begun. Donald Trump has less than impressive polling numbers. Those numbers are extremely high in today’s political arena. Although he is well under 50%, there is not a politician in the western world who rates anywhere near that high. Donald Trump has his supporters focused on building the wall. He has them repeating meaningless mantras like “Make America great again.” Meaningful news is never reported. Congress never shares knowledge with constituents. If they did most lawmakers would lose their jobs. In a free society, citizens need information to accomplish the task of managing government. Since only a handful of constituents know what is really going on in the world or what genuine issues are in play, ordinary people have no effect on what government does or doesn’t do.
In the meantime, the Trump economy is transferring wealth and income from the bottom of the food chain to the top at an accelerated pace. Trump’s supporters get to hear kind words from him while they are being fleeced.
Democrats are throwing hats in the ring. The cast of Democratic candidates is going to be part of the biggest freak show the country has ever seen. Very simply every democrat is running with agendas that that no government in the universe has a chance of accomplishing. The success of their issues depends upon their representatives being selfless and filled with the imaginary incentive to serve. Turn global warming over to government and watch feeding frenzies on government money ensue as public private partnership grow. How about ending racism or bias against LGBTs? Is government going to make folks love and appreciate one another? The whole concept of democracy comes down to being a way for people who vehemently disagree to live in the same place at the same time and still participate in government.
We live in a fascist world. Fascist means top down socialism. Fascism is a form of socialism. The campaign will come down to right wing top down socialist vs. left wing classic socialists. Statistically speaking there are no free market enthusiasts in the population at all. When the race for president comes down to two candidates both will do all possible to avoid revealing who they really are.
With free market principles abandoned, peace disappears. Economics by force is the only other option. Principles of democracy are being abandoned also. Democracy serves as a source of peace also. Lack of peace manifests itself in more ways than can be fathomed.
Campaign 2020 begins against a backdrop that includes a highly comfortable population, even with the lost of economic viability. The American population is too comfortable to do a lot of critical thinking. Notice how that changes, in cases when discomfort shows itself. The only thing that makes the outcome of the presidential race not completely predictable is the possibility that unexpected events might make the citizens uncomfortable. As comfort decreases, thinking increases a little. Actual suffering can spur all kinds of problem solving cerebral activity.
So, unless something out of the blue wakes up voters its going to be a total freak show from now until November 2020.

Both Democracy and free markets serve as substitutes for violence. Our free market system has been replaced by fascism. Once the claws of fascism grip a society, the living standards at the bottom rungs of the ladder decrease. With each passing day, poverty moves further up the ladder. Folks at the top, using political power, draw more and more income and wealth to themselves until the upper 5 percent possess virtual all of the wealth and income. This is a gradual process so those who suffer never figure out the cause of their troubles until the economy is destroyed. This is not capitalism.
Prior to democracy most issues were settled with violence. Currently our society is rejecting democracy in favor or an autocratic system. The public gets terrified when voters make other than mainstream choices. The news media panics and starts trying to defeat the candidate before the election is decided by popular suffrage. Politicians from both parties take the democratic process as a threat and try to prevent it from functioning.
The population is ignorant. Although self esteem is at record levels, citizens are completely ignorant of history. When economic stresses increase, they have no idea of the cause. When I point to the ignorant, I am not singling out blue collar workers. I am talking about university professors, physicians, attorneys, accountants and all others who unwittingly believe themselves to be enlightened. The ignorance and stupidity is pervasive. Opinions are managed. Opinions that bolster self esteem are the most popular. Of course the managed opinions only make people happy while destroying abilities to respond productively to the natural stresses the universe imposes.
So what happens when both the economy and the political system fail? People discover that they have been exploited and have no way to address their issues through government. That is when the violence starts and it can take numerous forms. Crimes at the top are already being committed at the top with impunity. All others take this as permission to commit crimes at lower levels. Chaos ensues.
Expect violence both from government and among the citizens. This is all perfectly normal for the situation we are moving into it.
With respect to the violence, I am not going to participate. For one thing I am to old, 67. Also, I have better judgment.
When our founding fathers set up the country, democracy had not been tried in a serious way. There was fear that an uneducated majority would vote the assets of everyone else into their pockets. Ben Franklin equated democracy to two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner. They organized a Republic to try and avoid that scenario. It was a good point but there were other issues they didn’t consider.
As it turns our human behavior in the political arena is guided by instinct and intellect takes a distant back seat. For eons humanity had lived under kings, chiefs and other leaders. Rather than elect representatives and rein them in, they sought the equivalents of kings and searched for messiahs. Americans were charged with the task of overseeing government but have always voted as if searching to find a parent to look after them.
Of course candidates for office like the rest of humanity are guided by self interest. It is safe to say that self interest is part of every human transaction. In all but a few cases it is the dominate motive.
With respect to highly ambitious people who run for office self interest as a motive is overwhelming.
In the absence of extreme pressure from constituents representation goes to those who offer the most in terms of helping the elected person achieve personal goals and aspirations.
Since work is a always second choice, selfish interests use government as a way to reap where they don’t sow. Once power has been achieved, holding onto power is too important to let outcomes to elections determine who holds an office. The right to shape public opinion, it turns out, trumps the right to vote as a means of determining who wins elections.
How many times do we hear, “be sure and vote. It is your civic duty?” Voters both liberals and conservatives head to the polls with their mind full of sound bites their minds have recorded from the media. The thoughts folks are exposed to are adopted as personal insights but are nothing of the kind.
Voting has great potential but mind control determines how elections turn out. With few exceptions, the winner of an election is acceptable to the reigning power structure at the time.
In the U.S. the financial sector is the most powerful group trying to gain traction in this election cycle. The majority of their political donations which are enormous are now going to Republican Candidate. Republicans are gaining a lot of power in 2014.
Chances are very good Democrats will now come out attacking Wall Street and the distorted income distribution. They will offer no real solutions but will seize the opportunity to offer a culprit as a way to gain back public support. This is the way politics actually works. Constituents have no chance of being represented by either party. They do get things but only as a means of pacifying them and keeping them comfortable. Politicians have known for a long time if the rank and file suffer too much they will rebel. This lesson was learned very well in the sixties during the Vietnam War. Any changes that came out of the sixties came from citizens working outside the system. It was business as usual at the ballot box.
Constituents will believe anything as long as they are comfortable and made to feel important. The truth is a hard sell. Fantasy Free Economics gains readers one at a time.
